honey, you called on the phone late last night
to tell me your love had grown cold.
i had nothin' to say, so i'll wait for the day
when you're lonesome, your broken, you're old.
livin' hard is just an inch from dyin'
and sippin' brandy's just a way of cryin'.
i'm broke and i'm blue,
so alone without you,
but i ain't givin' up yet on tryin'.
showed up for work bright and early next day
to find that my job's on the shelf.
so i shuffled home, to my room all alone,
just my brandy, my paints and my self.
livin' hard is just an inch from dyin'
and sippin' brandy's just a way of cryin'.
i'm broke and i'm blue,
so alone without you,
but i ain't givin' up yet on tryin'.
so, i'm painting a picture that's colors of blue.
i'm painting a picture that's finally true.
it's small, maybe meek, but the truth it does speak.
it's a picture of me without you.
livin' hard is just an inch from dyin',
and sippin' brandy's just a way of cryin'.
i'm broke and i'm blue,
so alone without you,
but i ain't givin' up yet on tryin'.
oh, i'm broke and i'm blue,
so alone without you,
but i ain't givin' up yet on tryin'.

Since encountering Gene's solo work (admittedly very late) in 2019, this and Out Of The Blue have been listening mainstays. Gene brings a remarkable lyricism and clarity to his performances. "She Wore The Red Shoes" has rapidly become one of my favourite pieces of music: hypnotic, alluring and very, very beautiful. Tristan Louth-Robins
Colin Andrew Sheffield (Elevator Bath) repurposes heavily manipulated jazz samples into gorgeously eerie soundscapes. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 20, 2023
